Names ~ Southern CA Photographer ~ Rachel Clare

What’s in a name?
A LOT comes from a name. JT and I have strong opinions about names and what they mean. I happen to really love old names. The crying shame is, now everyone else seems to as well. I’m not into naming your kid the same thing as everyone else. However, I’m also not into made-up names. I love the name Ava- guess what? So does everyone else. So there goes Ava, off my list. Too bad!

Old names have history and depth and character. Many of these names come from generations back on one’s family tree. I love that. My maternal grandmother was Miriam. Thus, we named our little one after her. Miriam- that was Moses’s sister. Talk about old. And Elias? Look him up in the Bible. He’s there. And, we named him that for a very specific reason- the meaning of his name.

I just got a lovely card in the mail from a friend of mine. On the front of the card is a beautiful baby. On the back is the name, “Josephine Ruth”, and it goes on to list the details as baby announcements do. Josephine Ruth. I love this name. It is old and deep.
I know an Emeline, a Cora, a Violet, a Samuel, a Charles, a Lucy, an Annabelle, a Joseph, a Rebekah, and now a Josephine. All are children- all under the age of 5. I think these children will grow to be good, strong people. Because they have good strong names.

I had the privilege of spending some time today with this sweet boy (appropriately named after his father and grandfather- what great importance!), and he was just about as perfect as a newborn could be for a photo session. I will post a real sneak peek soon, but here’s one to keep you interested…

Hurray for old names! Now we’re just going to be in a pickle choosing more names to match (not an announcement, just a thought). Perhaps Evelyn? That’s at the top of my list!

I love old names too! My husband and son have the same name that goes back 5 generations. It is a very very unique name, although it sounds made up… Androckles Marius (pronounced and-drock-lees). Yep, my hubby is the forth and my son is the fifth - so we call him Quinn. How is that for an old name? Cute photo!
